February
Dear Parent/Guardian,
It's been quite a cold start to the New Year. And it continues as we are in the month February. Please continue to remind your children to bundle up prior to coming to school. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who made our trip to the Museum of Nature so memorable. We appreciate your time and effort to accompany us on our excursion.
**A.M Class Only**
Science- we have completed our investigation on Light. The students showed much enthusiasm and curiosity in this area. We are now investigating properties and characteristics of Sound energy. We will raise some questions in class and will inquire about them as we push ahead to investgate this exciting new unit.
Health- we have been examining some of the issues associated with Cyberbullying. We have also looked at online safety and privacy , and ways in which students will increase their awareness through prevention. The students completed a comic strip cartoon which reflected their learning by writing possible scenarios on this topic. It was a very successful and useful exercise. We will now turn to investigate healthy food choices by examining Canada's Health Guide. Students will be made aware of nutrition labels, as well as understand the difference between good and poor food choices that could potentially affect our health.
**P.M Class Only**
Mathematics- . Students have been showing much improvement on their weekly multiplication quizzes. This is important for developing proficiency in multiplication and division. Please ensure your child study's for these weekly quizzes. We have also been investigating different areas of Measurement. Students have been exploring area and perimeter, and ways in which they connect to the real world. We will also begin to explore aspects of mass and capacity to wrap up our study on Measurement.
Language Arts- we have been completing our focus on Procedural writing. Students have created interesting writing samples on this form of writing. This is always a fun form of writing to learn. We will soon begin to focus on a reading cycle where students are expected to collect clues, or evidence in order to infer about a reading. This strategy has been explicitly modelled during our classroom read aloud on Barbara Smucker's novel Underground To Canada as part of our study on Black History month. Students have enjoyed listening to this novel and have asked many pertinent questions to drive discussions. Soon, we will begin to explain Non-Fiction text features by using a variety of reading material.
Religion- We will discuss the importance of prayer, giving to the less fortunate, and giving something up as a focus of Lent. Students will also examine the importance of God's plan for a family as part of Unit 3 in the Fully Alive program.
We thank the Parent Council for purchasing each grade four student a mini version of the New Testament. The students were extremely proud to receive this small bible and feel that much closer to God's family. Thank you Parent Council!!! A special thank you to Father Lukose for attending our small ceremony as well.
Thank you once again for all your support.
yours,
Mr.Dourian
